On a U.S. nuclear missile sub, a young First Officer stages a mutiny, to prevent his trigger happy Captain from launching his missiles, before confirming his orders to do so.
Instability in Russia results in the deployment of the the nuclear submarine "Alabama". Russian rebels have taken over a nuclear missile site and are fueling them for a possible strike against the USA. Tensions run high undersea, when the launch message is received, followed by an incomplete followup. Could the followup message have been to cancel the earlier orders?
OK film that strains to be &#39;gripping&#39;.<br/><br/>Gene Hackman is fine as a submarine captain who must battle with the second-in-command (Denzel Washington in an annoying portrayal). The movie dog-paddles along using crummy clichés that are intertwined with familiarizations of other navy flicks like The Caine Mutiny and The Hunt for Red October.<br/><br/>The only real question here is which officer (Hackman or Washington) is going to triumph at the end of the film by making the &#39;right decision&#39; concerning the prospect of the release of nuclear missiles. Script inadequacies include the over-use of expletives and a silly racist element. See this for Gene Hackman&#39;s usual solid performance, but really, folks, you&#39;ve seen this mutiny and submarine stuff before.<br/><br/>P.S. Note to the director - and many other directors whom make this same mistake….. Unless they&#39;re receiving a citation, MILITARY PERSONNEL DO NOT SALUTE INDOORS!
Every time I&#39;ve watched Crimson Tide, I&#39;m always shocked to see just how involved in it I get. From the visceral intensity of Tony Scott&#39;s masterful direction, to Hans Zimmer&#39;s top notch score, to the stunning multi-colored visuals, to the somewhat familiar but perfectly executed writing. This, to me, is what Hollywood filmmaking is all about. Story and visuals given equal importance. The second hour of this film is possibly the most continually involved and exciting I&#39;ve seen, or at least in recent memory. A modern classic.
Go see it, get the adrenaline rush, and then go home and forget about it. It's noisy and fun, but that's all it is.
The Unrated Extended Version runs more than 6 minutes longer than the theatrical version. It extends the story in many scenes.
